We have been here 9 months so far. As I look out at the scene around me from our balcony, I realize how far we have come since we 'moved' to Singapore. Our lives have changed by leaps and bounds in such a short amount of time. We have gotten wiser to the ways of the world, we have grown fonder of what we have back home, and we have seen other growth in many ways.
Singapore is growing with every breath - making progress they say. We have never seen the speed at which buildings are built as we have here. Construction phases are amazingly fast; no lallygagging in Singapore. I had a taxi driver explain it in short order yesterday; they work 36 hours a day to make progress :-)
Looking through my pictures that I have taken since I came, I decided to share the changes in our balcony view. The first picture in each set is from June- August 2008; the second was taken today or within the last couple of days:
Condo Construction:
School addition:
School Lot (sports field):
Tg Rhu Bridge (middle section of the picture where cranes are):
The Casino:
Where?
Here it is :-)
A closer view:
It is amazing what the world accomplishes in such a short time, and amazing how we grow with it. Are we making progress? I hope so.

amazing changes have taken place, and great that you have captured them.
Sometimes you don't realise that anything has happened until you take a photo and compare them.
Great shots. :-)
Excellent shot, I've not gone back to Singapore for almost 8 years now. It's so amazing to see how things progress. When I first left, Singapore's population was 3.6 million, and now, I heard 4.6 million? The birth rate in this island Republic is so low... probably the lowest in the world. The government said that it will develop Pulau Ubin if population hits 5 million.
There are prices to pay for progress. I can no longer find the place where I grew up. There are many very old ladies who contributed to the growth of Singapore (they were immigrants from China, who took pledges not to get married and contributed their entire life to construction), who were left alone in their small little one-room flat (just across the street I used to grew up), and they saved all their lives so that they can go back to China, but now, they're trapped in Singapore... the only reason: They don't have enough money to even buy an airticket.
If you go down to Little India, there are many homeless Indians sleeping on the street, many cannot get a ticket to go back and they are earning too little to save enough. The Singapore society is too torturous and unforgiving to those who fall behind. I think it is good for progress, but maybe I'm simply too emotional...... I can see the many rejects of this progress, in the name of economic development. It's definitely good to welcome talents and the rich, however, we often forgot the contributions of the lower ranked immigrant workers (who did all the menial works, and the tougher ones), and the poorer people.
Sorry, just some thoughts.
