Tucumcari to Taos

Yesterday we averaged 8.5 miles to the gallon of Diesel and went up around 6,000 ft.  Highway 108 out of Tucumcari is beautiful! Highway 518, from Las Vegas, New Mexico is amazing! They call it Taos high mountain highway.

Yesterday… Oh goodness! Brenda saw pronghorn, we saw prairie dogs and I saw lots of pistachio trees.  Lee and Mike are staying at a hotel, but they said there are a lot of prairie dogs next door to them. It is quite baron in a lot of  area, but when there is (human) life, amazingly artistic - from the homes to the art!

We saw so many different terrains between the two places; from desserts to mountains!  It was so beautiful!

We travel in a group; Steve first (big mega cab diesel and a 40 foot fifth wheel, Lee and Mike on their Harley pulling a trailer, then Brenda and Jim in a big diesel pickup pulling their camper.

But as we were on a high climb on one of the mountains, a semi with a flatbed trailer was coming down in the oncoming lane. Steve pulled over to give him room, Mike was ok on the bike as he doesn’t take much room, and Jim was over as well… but somehow, that 18 wheeler got past us and Mike and just as he got past Jim the back of his trailer hit the guardrail! I heard a bunch of metal rattling, but I thought it was his trailer bouncing, so never gave it another thought.

Jim said a big 4x4 under (?) (usually where they store them) flew out on the highway and the trailer was bouncing around like crazy, but the trucker got it under control and did not flip over the side. How terrifying!

I have prayed and prayed for that man and the people going both ways on the mountain pass! Did he stop? COULD he stop going down the pass? Did someone hit his 4x4? Is he ok? I will never know - we never even knew all of this until our next stop, but once I heard I just couldn’t quit praying and worrying. He still had half a mountain to get down! Anyway, that was awful to hear about and more awful not to know the outcome. I pray all is well.

The rest is just pics. This has been a wonderful trip!

This is the little royal gorge -
but it is pretty big if you ask me!

The ‘little’ gorge.

Got a great picture of Brenda!

Discussing the trailer incident at the campsite…

The sunset…

Amazing day. Thank God for this adventure.

Thomas to Tucumcari

Day 2 of our trip. We drove from Thomas, OK to Tucumcari, NM.  Pulling campers and stopping for fuel 4.5 hours. Diesel mileage with this 40’ 5th wheeler
was between 8-10mpg.

There is a beautiful hill that I would love to explore, but we aren’t taking the camper off of the truck, so we will admire it from a distance.  You can see it behind our camper in the last picture. Well, I added a picture of it after that now.

Found the sunflowers near mother’s - this time of year I always search them out…

Mother and Rod cooked for us,
Red grilled those yummy steaks.

Made it to Texas:

Ummmm…
Made it through Groom, Texas

Saw WAY more windmills and trucks
than I ever wanted to!

Made it to New Mexico - notice the scenery:

Ate at a wonderful BBQ place. 5 stars!  😋

Jim found a guitar and serenaded us:

Found our campsite. 😳  🥵
Campground? ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️
With this desolate land, you can’t ask for much. It is a decent place to stay for the night. No trash.
Lady in office? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We lost our camping buddies tonight. The A/C in their camper is broke, so the went to the same hotel that our other riding buddies are staying in. It’s ok, it is very hot here!  97° here - and you see the shade, right?  🤣

Oh, here is the hill:

Got to rest now, sun, heat, more sun… I am done.
Wish this sinus infection was better.
It is flared pretty bad. Colorado will help right? 🤣

Smokin’!

Steve is the best grilled I know. He is the best smoker I know. And not cigarette smoking.  He has been busy smoking meats for our vacation.  Our house has smelled wonderful for 2 full days. Today, the outside smells wonderful. Have I ever said I love this man? We freeze the meats and pack them to go! Load ‘em when we leave. Very little eating out because we like our own cooking.  It smells sooo good here!

Here is a funny. Dad’s (Jake’s) truck started and left - without the all important Jake miester! He was bawling! I sent this to Steve and he promptly came back for ‘the kid’. If that truck starts, that boy is supposed to be in it!  🤣

Nothing new sewing, but cutting this one out now.

That is all today!

Box 1, Part 1 Finished!

I talked about this quilt HERE.

It is finished! The little lady with the parted in a box must be thrilled!  It is pretty, but small. And what would you do with a small 3D quilt?  Hmmm.,.

Enjoy it for a bit and contemplate it’s future.

It still interests me as to why it has 3-D places… what purpose do the serve? Like the floppy heart sections… they would absolutely annoy me. Was this a thing at one time? I may never know, but gosh darn it… her quilt is finished. May some kid play with the ‘pockets’ some day!

Family Question #5

 Here is question #5:

What has been some of the happiest moments of your life?

My happiest moments;

1) The day Stephenie was born. After a lifetime of failures, humility, sexual abuse, female surgeries, with only part of one ovary, and multiple Drs wanting to do a hysterectomy - even at 16 - I successfully grew a perfect, beautiful baby.

                                  *

2) The day Jeremy was born. Bright red hair, another perfect baby. Mission accomplished. 2 children.

                                         *

3)  An evening in Singapore that Steve told me he was proud of me for always doing what I felt was best, even when he didn’t agree - which was often. Doing for my brother and sisters, for my moma, for my grans and for our kids. So much money that I spent on everyone else when we needed it. He shared that he loved my determination, strength and loyalty and had come to realize that he loved me even more for holding strong to what I felt was best. It was a wonderful feeling to hear someone, especially him, say that.

                                        *

4)  I wish I could say our wedding day. I can’t. I was young, abused and looking for a way out. He had protected me and stood up for me, and offered a way out. I married him 2 days after. We never even dated. In fact, I had never even went on one date with anyone in my life… unless one Movie and home was a dare. That was The Marathon Man with Steve. I was not allowed to date and was always caring for my sisters and brother.

It was a long, sometimes lonely haul - but we did it; together and often alone; him working and me raising kids, taking care of grans and taking care of moma. He worked many 100+ hours weeks, but he was always ready to hug me and encourage me when we were together.

I made a lot of decisions in his absence that I look back on and regret, but he was never angry. Frustrated, yes. Angry? No. We survived and he is honestly my best friend. Now are decisions are made together.

                                       *

The saddest?

August 16, 1976 … can’t go there…

                                         *

April 19, 1993: The day my dad died. I spoke with him that morning - and nearly every day for months before his death. I always loved him and always wished he loved himself as much. He was a genius but had no idea how to be one.

                                       *

March 1, 2002: Saydee, (Grands) the most Christian, precious woman I have ever known, died. She taught me morals, how to love unconditionally, how to forgive and that marriage would be the hardest job I would ever have. I treasured the time I had with her and took care of her.

                                     *

Jan 5, 2003: My sister called me hysterical that moma had died. We both just sobbed and sobbed. I had left moma a few months before to go back to Louisiana. Mom had begged me to stay, but I was so exhausted and needed to go home to salvage our marriage, that I told her Liz was taking over, I needed to rest.

Mom had previously died several times with me when she was in the hospitals and every time, I screamed, “Come back, damn it! I need you!” And she DID!

I wasn’t there on Jan 5, I had left her and I have never forgiven myself. If I had been there to scream I needed her… 😢

                                     *

Moma and her pride and joy, Michèl.

June 29, 1986. The day Michél died. It broke my heart. People’s opinions hurt my heart and made those days more difficult than they were, by voicing irrelevant opinions - none would bring her back.. Being the funeral ‘go to’ was heartbreaking; trying to be sure my sister’s wishes were filled, listening to everyone’ opinions, being ‘alone’ doing it while wrapping my own mind around her baby’s death… it was a tough time. I will never forgive myself for not doing what I felt like doing: yelling “Shut the hell up - she is gone! Hug Liz. She is here. We will deal with the rest later!” *I* should have just held Liz and bawled with her. But I did not do any of that. As always, I withdrew.

                                      *

March 5, 2001. A very sad day - and also a double blessing day. The day my nephew passed away and his sisters were born. I was broken hearted for my sister. She, too, lost a baby and I couldn’t hug her. I know her emotions were all over the place.

                                       *

My Uncle Danny’s death: he was truly the father that I never had. He was a wonderful man. I lived with him and Aunt Janie for a while in New Mexico. She taught me to sew, he taught me the love of photography. To the end of my time, I will miss him. Oh! And he truly WAS a rocket scientist! ❤️

                                          *

Distance makes it so hard to be there for ones you love.

Tell us about a day that you felt like everything about your day was perfect.

Honest to God vacations. I love traveling and I love traveling with whomever we are with.

I wish I could think of one perfect day… but one doesn’t come to mind. Perfect moments, yes. A day? Nothing stands out.

Weaning the Calves

On June 30, Steve moved the calves to the weaning pen. We are on day 5 and they have finally stopped bawling for the most part.

This was the ‘music’ for 3 days…

I think we have decided to sell a bunch of the cattle - they tie us down too much and right now we have too many anyway. Still a thought process, but we will decide soon.

I am starting a quick motorcycle quilt for the camper garage. We have two queen beds in the garage that lift to the top when not in use. I thought since it is a garage for the bike, that a bike quilt would be terrific. It will be a simple block quilt, nothing fancy.

Hospice Donation Quilt 1

Our church ladies group, United Methodist Women Stitchers, pick projects to sew for the community. We have made Veteran’s quilts for all of our members, we made book bags for the local library’s summer reading program, and recently, our leader was contacted to make lap quilts for hospice patients.

My friend, Brenda, found a pattern and we both decided to do it using different fabrics. Here is mine:

I will finish it with beige backing and using the “quilt as you go” method. I will start doing that next week at our Thursday meeting. I have some other things to work on prior to that.

Steve and I were walking around the pasture checking fence line and Jake, or ‘puppy’ casually led us right to a tree and looked up. A closer look showed us a raccoon, hiding as best it could by trying to melt into the bark. Fun times on the farm.

****

Struggling terribly today. Sinus infection flare from you know where, and my emotions are all over the place. I get so tired of the constant battles. Yes, I keep going, but some days, today being one, I just want to cave and give in. There are too many obstacles in my days. I will not give up, but sometimes, it is tempting. BUT! I have to make more Hospice Quilts. Someone, somewhere, needs them.
